Broadband access market worth $8.6 billion

The global FTTx, DSL and CMTS market totalled $8.6 billion at the end of 2010 according to research group Ovum.

The final quarter of 2010 showed strong revenue growth reaching $2.5 billion, a 13% increase compared to Q3 2010 and a 38% increase compared to Q4 2009.

Huawei held the greatest share of the market with 28.7% during 2010, increasing its hold by 5.1% over its 2009 figures. ZTE followed with 16% of the market in 2010, and then Alcatel-Lucent with 14.2%. All benefitted from expanding shipments to China during last year.

DSL was negatively impacted in some countries by FTTx substitution, but there was a notable resurgence in shipments with an 18%

growth compared to 2009. DSL upgrades were carried out as were fibre roll-outs. Europe made strong growth and in South and Central America (SCA) revenues nearly doubled in 2010. The report predicts the higher level of shipments to stabilise during 2011.
