TeleGeography notes that over 40 telcos launched pay-TV services last year, contributing to the increased number of subscribers. There are now over 200 IPTV services worldwide.
Western Europe holds the greatest number of IPTV subscribers: 40% of the market in 2010. Asia-Pacific follows close behind with 35% of subscribers, and growing twice as fast as western Europe. Asia-Pacific is predicted to hold the most IPTV subscribers by the end of 2011.
France has the greatest number of subscribers with 23% of the global total, while China and the US both have 16%. South Korea has 8% and Japan has 4%.
Globally, telcos have sold IPTV to over 10% of their broadband internet customers, meaning there is potential for substantial growth. But fierce competition will come from cable TV and satellite DTH services. IPTV holds only 6% of global pay-TV subscribers.
