Organised by the Internet Society, World IPv6 Day aims to conduct a 24-hour worldwide ‘test flight’ of IPv6. The test is supported by major web companies such as Google, Facebook and Yahoo!, as well as network and hosting companies, including Comcast, NFSI Telecom and Trunk Networks.
The test is intended to demonstrate how prepared technology companies are to handle IPv6 addresses. The Internet Society hopes the day will motivate organisations across the industry to prepare services for IPv6 to ensure a successful transition as IPv4 address space runs out.
"The groundwork that comes out of World IPv6 Day will help set the stage for worldwide adoption of the evolving internet. IPv6 will enable greater security and allow for convergence in ways we can only now imagine," said Pieter Poll, SVP of network planning, engineering and construction for CenturyLink.
Vicente San Miguel, the head of IT Systems at Telefónica said he welcomed “the chance to participate in initiatives like World IPv6 Day, which enable us to study the evolution and impact which a global test of this scale might have on our networks and services”.
