More than half of data traffic to be offloaded by 2015

Juniper Research predicts that 63% of traffic generated by smartphones, tablets and feature phones will transfer onto the fixed network using Wifi and femtocells by 2015.

This means 9000 petabytes (PB) will be annually offloaded by 2015 which is the same as 11 billion movie downloads.

The percentage of traffic offloaded is predicted to diminish at the end of the forecasted period due to the take up of LTE. The volume of data traffic from mobile networks will continue to grow over the next five years due

to the increasing volume of data traffic delivered to

mobile devices.

Offloading has the potential to create new services and applications by enhancing the use of existing services. Wifi accounts for 98% of the traffic offloaded, while femtocells will account for an increasing percentage by 2015. The region that is expected to see the highest penetration of femtocells for data offload will be North America.
