According to the report by Pyramid Research, the government hindered the operations of Orascom last year by demanding it pay $600 million in taxes and blocking the sale of Orascom’s mobile company, Djezzy, to MTN.
The Algerian market generated $4.66 billion in 2010, of which $801 million was generated by mobile data. Between 2010 and 2015, mobile data is expected to see 19.7% revenue growth. These figures take into account the introduction of 3G technology expected in 2012.
The Algerian regulatory body, ARPT, has been dominated by the government, stopping it from operating as a third party operator. The report predicts that change to government would mean 26.1% revenue CAGR between 2010 and 2015 for broadband internet.
