The enhancement of MTS’ backhaul capacity will support its delivery of 3G services requiring high bandwidth and further prepare the company to introduce LTE services.
“To prepare our urban transport network for the challenges of data traffic increase due to the development of fixed communication networks, 3G and future LTE introduction, we looked for a solution capable of supporting profitable internet growth while controlling costs and ensuring a quick return on investments,” said Oleg Larionov, transport network director at MTS.
As part of the agreement, Alcatel-Lucent will deploy its WDM networking solution in the north-west, the south and Volga region initially covering Moscow, St. Petersburg, Krasnodar, Rostov and Ufa.
MTS’ network will initially operate at low rates with the ability to reach 100Gbps cost effectively. Alcatel-Lucent claims that the deployment of its network will give MTS a secure base for storage area network deployment.
Earlier this year MTS, VimpelCom, MegaFon and Rostelecom partnered with broadband company Yota, to serve as the operators’ 4G network provider.
This latest announcement from MTS will further support its next-generation networks and help manage data traffic.
