Cable & Wireless Communications partners with iWayAfrica to extend reach

Cable & Wireless Communications’ African operation Afinis Communications has agreed to a strategic partnership with operator iWayAfrica to extend reach across the region.

Afinis has a firm presence in north, west and central Africa whereas iWayAfrica is stronger in the south and eastern areas of the continent. The partnership gives both companies reach in to areas where they respectively lacked presence in the past.

As part of the agreement, the telcos will share licences and access network infrastructure including installation, maintenance and support of the other party’s enterprise customers. CWC said both companies will still operate separate commercial operations.

Afinis is a subsidiary of Monaco Telecom International which is part of the CWC Group.

“This partnership will allow us to deliver secure world-class services in 21 additional countries in Africa,” said Reda El Mejjad, CEO at Monaco Telecom. “It does bring real value to our regional customers who need a telecoms partner with a wide presence across the continent and into the world.”

Both subsidiaries are relatively new to the market. Afinis Communications was formed in March this year as a combination of CWC’s African businesses and iWayAfrica, developed by Telkom South Africa, launched operations last year, primarily to provide services to African businesses.

“Driving efficiency and effectiveness across the value chain is in the best interests of both our customers,” said Harry Aucamp, CEO of iWayAfrica. “We are creating the most local global partnership.”
