Working in collaboration with the Agency for Technical Cooperation and Development (ACTED) and Mercy Corps, TSF technicians will install a VSAT antenna that will enable satellite connections for the various humanitarian organisations working in the area. The international hub will provide valuable internet, phone and fax access for NGOs as well as free calls for refugees.
Communications links in the north western city of Misrata have been crippled in the last four months following the uprising against Colonel Gaddafi. Rebel forces have taken over the city which continues to suffer from constant attacks from government forces.
TSF has played an active role in providing communication links for NGOs and refugees during the Libyan civil war. The non-governmental organisation which specialises in emergency telecommunications established a communications hub on the Tunisia and Libyan border between February 23 and May 13, helping to provide 40,000 free calls for refugees. It then went on to establish a communications base in the Libyan capital of Benghazi on April 20.
