The cable system, called HAWK, will provide 2.7Tbps of capacity and cover over 3,181km connecting Yeroskipos in Cyprus and Marseille in France.
HAWK will connect to Reliance Globalcom’s global submarine and European backhaul network linking Marseille to London, Paris and Frankfurt. The new cable aims to reduce latency between Cyprus and London compared to existing cables.
“HAWK connectivity in the Mediterranean region is a landmark event for connecting Cyprus and other countries to the five-continent network of Reliance Globalcom,” said Punit Garg, CEO and president of Reliance Globalcom.
The cable operator also said that the HAWK system has the ability to provide connectivity in Tunisia, Libya, Italy, Turkey and Syria due to its position in the Mediterranean.
The Cypriot fixed-line and TV service provider, PrimeTel, has partnered with Reliance Globalcom to act as a landing station in Yeroskipos. Reliance Globalcom said that it sees this alliance as an opportunity to increase Cyprus’ connectivity to the rest of the world.
“With this project, PrimeTel has access to huge broadband capacity while reducing latency in data transfer,” commented Hermes Stephanou, CEO of PrimeTel.
PrimeTel has also built a landing station in Paphos, Cyprus for Reliance Globalcom’s cable connecting France to Egypt.
