The wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) system connects the economic and business centres of Nanjing and Wuxi in the Jiangsu province of the Yangtze River Delta.
Demand for data storage and video means that carriers are being put under more pressure to meet bandwidth demands from their customers. Huawei said that to resolve this issue, operators need to be able to adapt their live IP core and 40G WDMs to carry more services.
"100G is key to satisfying the growing demand for high-bandwidth services and enabling rapid telecommunications development to continue in China and around the world,” said Christian Chua, president of transport, Huawei. “The successful deployment of this 100G system with our strategic partner China Telecom has launched China into the ultra-broadband era."
The Chinese vendor said that the successful transmission of the 100G service suggests a 2.5 time increase in capacity of the live network to 100Gbs per channel. This new deployment has given Jiangsu a base on which to strengthen its telecoms backbone.
"The question you have to ask is if this is coherent or not? [Coherent technology] electronically processes the signal that’s received allowing you to power and go further on worse fibre," said Ron Kline principal analyst in network infrastructure at Ovum. "Coherent technology is really the big leap that vendors have taken first with 40G now with 100G."
