The company believes its FP3 processor will open up possibilities for bandwidth-intensive services, applications and content, while cutting power consumption by up to 50%. It also claims a single FP3 processor could be capable of handling 70,000 simultaneous HD video streams or 8.4 million simultaneous retail cloud sessions.
Alcatel-Lucent’s president of IP division, Basil Alwan, said the technology positions the company as “a generation ahead of today's fastest IP core routers”.
“By making networks faster, smarter and more environmentally sustainable, Alcatel-Lucent is enabling the continuous innovation of consumer and business devices, content and applications that increasingly depend on service provider networks," he added.
The processor will be available on the market in 2012 when the company believes it could help carriers’ process traffic at much higher speeds than what are achievable today.
Alcatel-Lucent’s VP of IP division, EMEA marketing, Phil Tilley says that the capability to support a much higher volume and density of traffic could enable carriers to support many more subscribers at a higher bandwidth consumption per subscriber in the network.
“It’s giving increased density in a telecoms rack space that will allow an operator to converge fixed, broadband and mobile services on to a single converged network. This capability will sit at the edge of the network at the point of almost aggregation or service delivery to a subscriber, allowing the subscriber to have multiple qualities of service and more capacity,” he added.
