  • Level 3 has added PoPs in Ljubljana, Slovenia and Zagreb, Croatia to provide more customers in eastern Europe with services such as Ethernet, high-speed IP, direct internet access and VPN. Level 3 said that it is investing in the area due to the increasing internet traffic being generated in the region. Tomaz Tomsic, head of international carrier services for Telekom Slovenije asid: “The direct access to Level 3’s international IP backbone network will not only keep us and our customers more connected to businesses around the world, but it will keep us more competitive as well.”

 

  • Cableco, Allied Fiber, and data centre operator, DuPont Fabros Technology (DFT), have signed an agreement to connect Allied Fiber’s dark fibre system to DFT’s data centre in Piscataway, New Jersey. The connection is scheduled to be operational in the final quarter of this year. Allied Fibre will use DFT’s presence to secure its fibre entrance into the region while DFT hopes to take advantage of Allied Fiber’s dark fibre route from New Jersey to Chicago bypassing Manhattan in New York.

 

  • Telia has been selected by Swedish housing company Riksbyggen to build open fibre networks for its houses in the southern Swedish city of Jonkoping. The open network allows tenants of the rented properties to choose broadband services from a number of providers. Telia said that the agreement is set to last eight years and is worth approximately $1.74 million. The end-users will also be able to access broadband speeds of up to 100Mbps with plans to increase the speed to 1000Mbps.

 

  • Cypriot operator, Cyta, has announced the agreement with Telecom Egypt (TE) to start commercial operations of the Cyprus-Egypt segment of private submarine cable system ALEXANDROS. The new subsystem will connect Egypt to PoPs owned by Cyta and TE and give both countries greater connections in the Mediterranean. The new addition to the cable network is scheduled to be activated this summer following the successful activation of the Cyprus-France segment in August 2010.

 

  • Zayo announced plans to expand its fibre network in Cincinnati, Ohio as part of an agreement to deliver services for one of its large wholesale customers. The expansion will add to Zayo’s existing network in Cincinnati’s business district and surrounding area. Zayo has said it will double its on-net building count in the city to enhance route diversity. Matt Erickson president of Zayo Fiber Solutions explained that this new build is to meet customer demand. “This Cincinnati expansion is typical of how customers drive the geographic expansion of Zayo’s unique fibre networks.”

 

  • Telefónica Brazil is looking to extend its FTTH coverage across the country, focussing on the Sao Paulo region. According to TeleGeography, the telco already covers, potentially, 400,000 homes with 20,000 signed up to the company’s services. Telefónica Brazil reportedly plans to increase coverage to 1 million homes before 2015 and increase its FTTH user base to 70,000 with a plan to have one million fibre customers in the next four years.

 

  • T-Mobile Czech Republic has added 26 new towns to its 3G network increasing coverage to 50.33% of the country’s population. Additional base stations are now available due to the telco’s expansion partnership with Telefónica Czezh Republic to increase both companies’ 3G network. The group of shared towns has been extended to Velke Mezirici, Pacov, Tynec nad Sazavou and Kamenice nad Lipou.
