The move aims to promote the development of regional standards in Asia, which will go on to be recognised by the international community. It is hoped this will help product manufacturers to more efficiently incorporate global standards in their products, helping new technologies come to the market quicker and at a lower cost.
Dr Hamadoun Touré, secretary-general of ITU claimed that “China, Japan and Korea have been at the forefront of the development of many of the technologies that underpin the information society”.
“At the same time, all three countries have shown a commitment to the development of the international standards that provide the interoperability needed to seamlessly connect the world. This agreement cements the relationship between ITU and four premier standards organisations in the region,” he added.
The ITU signed MoUs with the Association of Radio Industries and Business (ARIB) of Japan, China Communications Standards Association (CCSA), Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA) of the Republic of Korea and Telecommunication Technology Committee (TTC) of Japan.
The ITU has been actively promoting standards in the Asia-Pacific region recently, and only earlier this month held a regional workshop on ‘Bridging the Standardisation Gap’ in Nadi Fiji, which was attended by the Pacific Islands Technology Association (PITA), as well as the TTA.
