Infonetics Research found that the number of mobile broadband subscribers totalled 558 million, compared to 500 million wireline subscribers last year. Stéphane Téral, Infonetics Research’s principal analyst for mobile infrastructure, commented: “Fixed-line services are not dead though, especially with China giving a boost to the worldwide wireline broadband base.”
The number of cellular mobile broadband subscribers grew almost 60% in 2010 and is expected to grow to 2 billion by 2015. The Asia-Pacific region accounted for almost half of all mobile subscribers last year.
Access lines such as PSTN, POTS and ISDN are expected to decline by 2015 but new wireline technologies such as DSL, cable and FTTH are predicted to grow, having reached 500 million in 2010.
