As the uptake of tablets and smartphones increases, there is an increasing demand from Shaw’s customers for increased Wifi access across various markets. Cisco’s Visual Networking Index forecasts for 2010-2015 estimates there will be 15 billion network connections by 2015, largely due to an increase in data usage. Shaw will deploy a range of internet networking technologies from Cisco, including its CRS-3 Carrier Routing System to deliver additional video and data capabilities.
Peter Bissonnette, president at Shaw Communications commented on the increasing trend among Canadian consumers to “rely on Wifi to explore the internet, connect with loved ones and enjoy entertainment”. He continued: “Thanks to our collaboration with Cisco, Shaw’s Wifi network will allow us to become the first service provider in Canada to deliver our secure and incredibly fast internet in thousands of locations.”
Cisco’s technologies provide additional advantages to Shaw, including a scalable mobile internet solution that does not need a cellular network to gain access. Shaw said it will also have an increased focus on securing Wifi coverage connection at large scale sporting events and on transit systems.
“Shaw’s investment in a true next-generation Internet network will enable them to drive exciting new communication and entertainment services, which will create new revenue streams for the company,” added Kelly Ahuja, SVP, general manager and chief architect at Cisco.
Deployment of the Wifi network will begin late this year and be completed by spring 2012.
