VTLWaveNet has announced that since July 2011 SURFnet has been using its international fibre route between Amsterdam and Geneva (CERN) to deploy a high speed, ultra long-haul 100Gbps wavelength. The route covers 1,650km over 23 fibre spans, which VTLWaveNet claims is the longest 100Gbps connection deployed.
Korean telco KT announced significant improvements this week to its cloud communications centre (CCC) system, installed in Seoul earlier this year. It estimates that the speed of wireless data transmission will double as a result. KT’s CCC system covers around 90% of Seoul, with plans to extend it significantly this year.
Telefónica has launched an interconnection with an interface capacity of 100Gbps, between Telefónica Espana and the international network of Telefónica International Wholesale Services (TIWS). Following the upgrade, the interconnection capacity between the two networks exceeds 1.2Tbps, and is expected to increase to over 1.8Tbps in 2012.
Reliance Globalcom has upgraded the capacity of its undersea cable system connecting Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Far East to over 500Gbps with a view to usher in a "bandwidth revolution" on the route. Indian broadband and telecommunications company Reliance Communications announced the "... commercial launch of the upgraded capacity on Flag Europe Asia (FEA) and Falcon Cable Systems to over 500Gbps."
LIME, the Caribbean business of Cable & Wireless Communications, has announced its first 4G network in the Cayman Islands, which provides 100% coverage of all three Cayman islands (Grand Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac).
TeliaSonera International Carrier has selected QTS to host its Atlanta PoP for managed data services. TeliaSonera is expanding its US footprint to support north American customers demanding high-quality services and its PoP will be hosted in QTS’ Atlanta metro facility.
Macedonia’s Makedonski Telekom has announced the introduction of a new multimedia next-generation platform based on IP. This marks the start of Makedonski’s modernisation of its network, and the first phase will include the following regions: Skopje (Centar, Kisela Voda), Gevgelija, Tetovo and Veles. The total project is expected to cost €14 million and is due to be completed by the end of 2013.
North American interconnection and data centre provider Telx has announced that LinkBermuda (formerly Cable & Wireless Bermuda) has joined the Telx Ethernet Exchange in the metro New York City region.
And finally, Zayo is participating in a coalition to construct a new fibre-optic network across western Ohio which connects Toledo to Columbus. This project has received funding from the federal Recovery Act Broadband Technology Opportunities Program to add and expand broadband services to rural and underserved communities in Western Ohio.
