The 17,000km route, known as Rotax, will stretch along Russia’s Arctic and Pacific coasts, with an expected capacity of 9.6Tbps.
Construction will be overseen by Polarnet Project, which has been conducting marine survey operations in the Arctic to prove the feasibility of deploying the subsea system.
The project is estimated to cost a total of approximately $1.3 billion and construction is expected to begin next year. The cable system will reportedly be deployed in three stages, and will involve a strategic partnership with the Russian state-owned business, Transneft, which is responsible for the largest oil pipeline system in the world.
