Indosat and Nokia Siemens Networks have partnered to conduct Indonesia’s first LTE trial in the 1800MHz band. Based on FDD-LTE technology, the trial took place in Surabaya and Bali. The companies presented new applications, including e-doctor and e-education, which allows consumers to access a remote doctor and a remote lecturer respectively, to showcase the technology. 3D video streaming and CCTV camera surveillance were also demonstrated.

Infinera has been selected by Maryland Broadband Cooperative to launch a statewide optical transport network built with Infinera’s regional DTN and metro ATN platforms. The service provider said it selected Infinera because of its simple, scalable and efficient solution. Maryland Broadband Cooperative offers an open access middle mile fibre solution, in addition to Ethernet and internet services. Its platform spans across 1300 miles, and through Infinera’s offering, the company will expand its service to offer high-speed broadband to businesses, healthcare facilities, financial institutions and extend its network to rural residents in Maryland.

Telefonica has signed a deal with China Unicom to promote the development of M2M and over the top services through its new Telefonica Digital platform. This latest collaboration agreement extends a strategic alliance entered by the companies based on improving mobile services platforms, wholesale services and roaming agreements. Telefonica said, through M2M, the companies will develop different technologies in cellular communications, identification by radiofrequency (RFID), sensors and global positioning systems (GPS). The joint collaboration will aim to boost capability of M2M and offer proposals in the market on a bigger scale -based on the different markets that Telefonica and China Unicom operate in. Chinese solution and technology company Huawei has launched a TV white space LTE TDD system trial. Huawei notes, with the advent of an increasing proliferation of smart devices, operators are left with the problem of limited spectrum resources, so it has taken the step to use the spaces that is left between channels and interference. TV white space is significantly underused in most countries, according to Huawei and offers many benefits for broadband use, including large bandwidth, high penetration and extensive coverage. The company began its development of the system in 2009 and has now completed the first phase of its laboratory trial. It expects to finalise the solution by mid-2012.

Russian carrier Rostelecom and technology solutions provider Huawei have completed a 100Gbps trial across a stretch of the carrier’s network between Moscow and Samara spanning 1033km. Huawei said the rapid increase in bandwidth leasing is leading the increase in broadband services between Europe and Asia and much of this was accounting for the transport capacity on Rostelecom’s backbone network. Rostelecom has been exploring a way to develop its services, and it is expected the company will also look in to the possibility of constructing 100Gbps backbone transport networks.

Cloud hosting and managed network service provider Voxtel dot net has interconnected with Telehouse America at its New York Chelsea data centre. Located in Manhattan’s meat packing district, Telehouse’s location provides carrier neutral data centre services and has had a partnership with Voxtel since 2003. The partnership enables Voxtel to provide IP transit, CDN and transport out of the Telehouse Chelsea centre and also allows an extended hybrid infrastructure offering.

Sidera Networks has expanded its network into DuPont Fabros Technology’s (DFT) Ashburn corporate campus in Northern Virginia. The expansion allows DFT customers access to Sidera’s high capacity network. This latest announcement is part of Sidera’s earlier network expansion, announced last summer to DFT’s data centre in New Jersey, which allowed customers access to low-latency connectivity to key financial exchanges in the New York metro area.

Qatari operator Qtel has launched a mobile money service in the region to allow customers a platform for money transfers through its mWallet solution. The company has partnered with Sybase 365, EastNets and BICs to develop the solution, and its operation is mainly intended to serve a high percentage of foreign workers that are presently ‘underbanked’ in Qatar.

Asset management company The Carlyle Group has acquired an 85% stake in Spanish TV company Telecable. Worth $400 million, the transaction gives The Carlyle Group a controlling stake in a company that serves 156,000 fixed and mobile voice customers, with revenues in excess of €121 million. The private finance company said it is committed to supporting Telecable’s growth by pioneering innovation communication technologies in the Spanish market.

Middle East cable operator GBI has signed a multi-year contract with optical network solutions provider Xtera Communications to supply 100G upgrades to the company’s terrestrial and subsea systems.
