The network, deployed by Alcatel-Lucent, has the capability of carrying up to 88 100G channels over single fibre pairs. The company estimates the new connection will be able to handle up to 133 million voice calls, 440,000 HDTV channels and transmit 44 blue-ray disks in one second.
Peter Bissonnette, president of Shaw Communications explained that the company was upgrading its network to keep up with growing demand for over-the-top (OTT) services in the market.
“People are demanding more from their internet experience, and as a leader in broadband internet, Shaw continues to upgrade to bring Canadians the best internet experience”, he said. “The launch of this fibre-optic network allows us to lay the foundation in delivering a new internet experience for our customers."
The upgrade follows the announcement in September of a deal between Shaw and Cisco to deploy an advanced Wifi network across Western Canada.
