The new high capacity submarine cable would be in a position to complement the existing CADMOS cable system between the two countries. It would also form a bridge between Europe and the Middle East by interconnecting with the ALEXANDROS cable subsystem landing in Cyprus and the IMEWE system landing in Lebanon. The EUROPA cable is expected to be a repeaterless submarine cable with at least eight fibre-pairs.
The announcement was made after the conclusion of a high level bilateral meeting between Lebanese minister of telecoms, Nicolas Sehnaoui and Cyta CEO Photis Savvides, in Beirut.
Speaking after the meeting, Savvides expressed his belief that the cable system would foster a partnership between Cyta and the Lebanese MoT. He explained that the cable would enhance the strategic role of Cyprus, through Cyta, as a major hub in the Eastern Mediterranean and facilitate Lebanese MoT’s strategic goal to strengthen Lebanon’s position in the international telecommunications landscape.
