Fixed broadband overtakes voice in 2012 consumer revenues

There will be a significant shift in revenues in the global home landline market in 2012, according to Ovum, when revenues from fixed broadband in the home will overtake voice for the first time.

Its report, Global fixed voice and broadband market outlook: 2011-16, forecasts that consumer fixed voice revenues will fall from $176 billion in 2011 to $158.6 billion in 2012.

Meanwhile, consumer fixed broadband revenues are expected to grown from $167 billion to $180.5 billion during the same period.

The growth is driven by increased video traffic, more applications and content in the cloud and more connected devices, as well as internet-based voice services such as Skype.

Ovum analyst Charlie Davis commented: “Our research reveals the extent to which the fixed voice telecoms market is shrinking and just how important broadband has become to the industry.”
