However, during the same period, the number of FTTH/B subscribers has increased by a more modest 14%, with a total of nearly 4.6 million subscribers.
Russia leads the way in FTTH/B, with 5.1 million FTTH/B subscribers, and 11.7 million homes passed. Ukraine follows close behind, with nearly 5 million subscribers.
Scandinavian countries are leading the way in western Europe: Sweden has 625,000 subscribers, while Norway has 62% penetration rates. However, the situation across Europe as a whole is quite disparate, with France only having a penetration rate of 10%.
Ethernet is still the first choice in terms of technology deployed, and represented 71% of all FTTH/B roll outs at the end of June 2011.
