US fibre and broadband experience growth

Fibre is expected to account for around 14% of all broadband customers in the US by 2016, according to research by Pyramid Research, driven substantially by the number of fibre networks already in place in the US.

The largest fibre network is owned by Verizon, which had 4.5 million subscribers in Q2 2011. Since 2008, Verizon has been providing residential and business FTTH-based services, as well as wholesale services.

Verizon FiOS is a bundled home communications service offering internet, telephone, and television, and about 85% of all customers are buying triple-play services.

Meanwhile, Google is seeking to break into the US fibre market, launching an initiative to deploy fibre in Kansas City and is planning to “light up” its first fibre customers in the first half of next year.
