HSPA/LTE broadband connections grow across Europe

HSPA/LTE accounted for 20.6% of the total number of broadband connections in Europe at the end of 2010, according to a report from Berg Insight.

The number of HSPA/LTE mobile broadband subscribers grew to reach 33.9 million by the end of 2010, highlighting a year-on-year increase of 33%. The analyst firm predicts this figure will continue to grow at a CAGR of 18.9% to reach 96 million by 2016.

Comparatively, the North American market is growing at a slower pace, with mobile broadband accounting for only 13.2% of the total number of connections. However, the market is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 25.8% to reach

58 million subscribers by the end of 2016.

Within Europe, the adoption of mobile broadband varies significantly, with Austria recording a penetration rate of over 20%, while the likes of Belgium, Switzerland and Greece have penetration rates of less than 3%.
