SFN claimed that the cable will assist the development of latency-sensitive vertical sectors, such as Ireland’s digital services industry, and support the growth of data-driven applications like cloud computing, online gaming, social media and mobile data services.
Pat Rabbitte, Ireland’s Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, said: “Ireland's continued success in attracting digital services foreign direct investment is dependent on its ability to deliver on the fundamentals of high capacity communications infrastructure - the most critical of which is a modern sub-sea cable capable of transporting content and data in and out of the country securely and at the highest speeds”.
The subsea cable laying is being carried out by the Global Marine Group vessel the Cable Innovator.
The new cable laying follows an announcement by Emerald Networks last week of plans for a high capacity subsea cable connecting the US and Ireland.
