NSN upgrades Indonesian undersea link

Indonesian telecoms operator PT Telkom has partnered with Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) to upgrade its JaSuKa subsea cable between Dumai and Dangas.

The 354km cable system has been upgraded to 40Gbps on each of its four channels. The link carries fixed and mobile voice and data traffic from PT Telkom and other Indonesian operators.

Under the contract, NSN’s network managing system will support the JaSuKa backbone network. The company also provided its DWDM solution, comprising of the hiT 7300 optical network platform. The hiT 7300 aims to provide cost savings by either adopting no dispersion compensation techniques on fibre or by utilising the operator’s installed DWDM network infrastructure.

"This initiative is part of our vision to develop the Nusantara Super Highway to provide true broadband to 90% of capital districts across the Indonesian Archipelago by 2015. We are upgrading our terrestrial network to 40G to cope with the increased demand for bandwidth-intensive applications and services. The JaSuKa undersea cable is critical for international connectivity and we felt it was time to increase its capacity too,” said David Bangun, executive general manager of telecommunication infrastructure at PT Telkom.
