Globacom announces Ghana mobile network launch

The board of Globacom has announced the launch of the company’s Glo mobile network in Ghana, planned for January 19.

The move follows an announcement last month that the company was ready for launch having completed an extensive infrastructure building programme. The programme included more than 1600 base transceiver stations (BTS), five switches with capacity for ten million lines and 18 base switching centres (BSC). In addition 800 3G Node Bs, a call centre and 25 Gloworld outlets were built to compliment the network.

The Glo mobile network is a 3.5G+ system with NGN technology. The rollout of the service will be supported by a 2900 km terrestrial fibre optic ring network, which has been built across the country, and by the company’s Glo1 submarine cable.

George Andah, CEO of Glo Mobile Ghana said: “We will continue to pursue our resolve to provide the needed opportunity for Africa to leap forward economically through an excellent communication network and cost-effective voice, data, video and e-commerce services.”

Andah said that Globacom owed much of its success in the country to the support received personally from President John Evans Atta Mills and the Government, as well as support from wider Ghanaian society.
