The company claims that it is the first provider to perform an upgrade with the latest generation of vectoring technology.
Vectoring technology helps to produce a clean signal on copper lines by cancelling noise. This minimises the impact of interference between the parallel running lines within a cable and improves performance, while allowing data transmission speeds to be significantly boosted.
A1 claims that the upgrade will allow its existing copper network to be able to achieve data transmission speeds of 100Mbps at distances of up to 300m, and speeds of 50Mbps at distances of up to 800m.
Walter Goldenits, CTO, A1 said: “The still untapped potential of copper lines is incredibly impressive. Since the late 1990s, when private households started to use modems for data transmission, we have been able to reach a thousand-fold increase in transmission capacities of existing copper lines.”
The first phase of the vectoring technology rollout will be launched in Korneuburg, lower Austria. Following this preliminary test phase the technology will be rolled out in all main Austrian cities with a fibre to the curb network. A countrywide rollout is planned for the second half of 2012.
