Ericsson will upgrade China Telecom’s packet data serving node, expand its CDMA packet core network and provide related services for a period of two years. The vendor will also deploy what it claims is the world’s first smart-pipe solution customised for CDMA networks in the Zhejiang and Anhui provinces.
It is claimed that the deal will improve end-user experience, help China Telecom find additional sources of revenue and lay the groundwork for a future move to LTE.
China Telecom eventually plans to incorporate its packet core network into its CDMA networks across the country.
“With our rich experience and leading expertise in mobile networks, we're committed to supporting China Telecom to create a better mobile broadband experience for tens of millions of CDMA subscribers in China," said Mats Olsson, president of Ericsson region China & North East Asia.
In a separate announcement, Ericsson said that it has entered into the data centre market as part of its network-enabled cloud concept.
Ericsson will build and optimise data centres targeting operators who are looking to offer public cloud-based services for their enterprise customers.
Paolo Colella, head of consulting and systems integration at Ericsson, said: "Operators are ideally positioned to offer high quality, high security and high availability cloud services to enterprises. We bring telecom-grade thinking to the cloud space, focussing both on availability and security of the services, as well as cost and efficiency gains for enterprise customers.”
