Mobile data traffic to rise dramatically by 2016

Global mobile data traffic will more than double in 2012, according to Cisco’s visual networking index.

Traffic rose by 133% in 2011, more than doubling for the fourth year in a row. Cisco estimates that traffic will grow by 110% in 2012, with the evolving mixture of devices and the migration of traffic from fixed networks potentially raising growth rates even higher. Tiered pricing and traffic offload may reduce this effect.

Overall mobile data traffic is expected to grow to 10.8 million terabytes per month by 2016, increasing 18 times over 2011. A CAGR of 78% is also expected from 2011 to 16. Asia-Pacific and western Europe will account for over half of mobile traffic by the end of the forecast period, while the Middle East and Africa will experience the highest CAGR of 104%, increasing 36 times from 2011.
