Speaking exclusively to Capacity in São Paulo, Brazil, during Capacity Latam 2012, Level 3’s regional president of Latin America & Caribbean, Hector Alonso, also said the company has begun construction of a third data centre in the nation.
“Colombia is probably one of the most consistent and steady markets for growth over the last three to five years,” said Alonso. “We are conducting deep analysis which will suggest if there is a need for a landing station there.”
Once a decision has been made, Alonso estimates it will take approximately 18 months to complete the landing station. The company presently has landing stations in Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Panama, Venezula, Mexico and Costa Rica.
Alonso indicated that Level 3 has already made large investments across Colombia, particularly in regards to its metro network access, backbone, long-haul networks and data centres.
Level 3’s first data centre was established in Colombia in 2000 and Alonso admitted its two existing facilities are presently approaching an “exhaustion” of capacity. Construction of a third data centre in the country is now underway and it is expected to be completed before the end of this year.
