Operators to spend $186 billion on Carrier Ethernet equipment 2012-2016

Operators will spend a cumulative $186 billion worldwide on Carrier Ethernet equipment from 2012 to 2016 according to a report from Infonetics Research.

The global Carrier Ethernet equipment market grew 13.4% to $31.7 billion in 2011, following a 43% rise in 2010. Mobile backhaul was one of the main growth areas, with IP/Ethernet equipment accounting for 93% of all mobile backhaul equipment spending in 2011.

Carrier spending in the Ethernet equipment market was led by purchases of IP routers, Carrier Ethernet switches and optical gear, while Ethernet-only microwave was found to be the fasted growing market segment based on its use for mobile backhaul.

Infonetics projects that Carrier Ethernet equipment revenue will grow to just over $42.4 billion in 2016 with a key market driver being service providers moving to IP packet-based networks.
