The operator now offers its 4G network to Antwerp, Ghent, Leuven, Liége and Namur. 4G has been tested successfully for over a year at the University Hospital of Brussels for business customers, and the company has now taken the step to open its 4G networks to most of its subscriber base.
Its 4G roll-out began in Hasselt, Mons, Waver and Hassrode in the country, and its latest expansion underlines how well advanced the country is in comparison to other European countries, including the UK, which is still yet to hold its licence spectrum auction for 4G.
4G/LTE technology accommodates high-speed data traffic, and can be up to 10 times faster than 3G technology. Belgacom said it presently uses the 1.8GHz frequency band for 4G roll-out, but if more capacity is needed it can upgrade to 2.6GHz frequency. The company acquired frequency in the higher 2.6GHz band in November last year.
