The Ericsson SSR 8020 platform will support MTN Nigeria’s 2G, 3G and Wifi networks and future upgrades to LTE, enabling cost savings as less nodes are required to handle network bandwidth growth.
Data traffic growth in Nigeria was estimated at 100% last year and is showing no signs of slowing down.
"Deploying this platform will make our network more efficient and scalable to cater for the growing data demands of our subscribers," said Lynda Saint-Nwafor, CTO of MTN Nigeria.
Ericsson claims that the SSR 8020 will boost MTN’s ability to serve subscribers with a backplane capacity of up to 16Tbps. The vendor will provide installation, integration and commissioning of the SSR 8020 platform as well as support services.
