The three operators have 12 months to roll out their networks with a maximum deadline of 24 months to start offering LTE services in 543 rural locations lacking in internet connectivity.
Claro, which is a subsidiary of América Móvil, was awarded Block A of the 2.6GHz frequency for $2.9 million, Block B was awarded to local player Entel for $8.84 million, and Block C to Telefónica’s Movistar for $503,134. There were no other bidders for the spectrum.
Chile’s Minister of Transport and Telecommunications, Pedro Pablo Errazuriz, said that operators were assessed not only by their bid value but also their ability to ensure coverage, competition and quality of service, means to provide signal quality indoors and standards for infrastructure sharing.
