Chinese equipment vendor Huawei has been selected for the deployment, which will utilise the vendor’s GPON FTTW solution.
The technology will be applied to China Mobile subsidiary Shangdong Mobile’s E2E mobile backhaul network, including the company’s optical line terminal, optical distribution network and optical access equipment MDUs.
The vendor said that its solution uses GPON access technology to backhaul WLAN data streams, and will offer 54Mbps internet access at 50,000 WLAN hotspots in areas including schools, offices, transport hubs and hotels.
China Mobile is carrying out the upgrade to meet increasing demand for high bandwidth mobile broadband and to improve its competitiveness.
Huawei is a leader in the global access market for fixed broadband, FTTx, PON and DSL deployments. The vendor was recently crowned number one in terms of market share for the first quarter of 2012 by analysts Infonetics Research, Ovum and BBT, a position it has held for two consecutive years.
