The Dow Jones newswire reported late yesterday that Ericsson was one of two parties interested in acquiring the BSS unit, with US equipment maker Amdocs also interested in making the investment.
It is thought NSN is considering selling the unit, but the company declined to comment on whether any deal was imminent. All rumoured parties involved with any potential deal were unavailable to comment.
As part of a streamlining strategy, NSN will cut 17,000 of its workforce, a quarter of its total in an effort to improve its financial position and the sale of its BSS unit could further aid that.
Ericsson made significant investment in its BSS and operations system last year, after it acquired Telcordia in the US for $1.1 billion.
