Optus said that the 4G launch builds upon recent enhancements to its 3G network that have resulted in strong mobile performance for customers. The carrier is offering 4G smartphones to customers immediately as well as USB modems.
"We're excited about the new opportunities that 4G will provide for Optus customers. Whether that's downloading multiple songs at the same time, or uploading videos and photos to social media – customers will love the experience and speed that Optus 4G has to offer," said Kevin Russell, CEO Consumer Australia at Optus.
In Sydney, Optus’ coverage stretches from Bondi in the east to Newington in the west, and from La Perouse in the south to Dee Why in the north.
The SingTel subsidiaries’ Perth network extends from Perth Airport in the east to City Beach in the west, and from Como in the south to Innaloo in the north.
The Newcastle network covers the whole of the city as well as Port Stephens and the Hunter Valley in Lake Macquarie areas.
When it is launched later this month, the Melbourne network will cover Blackburn in the east to St Albans in the west, and from Brighton in the south to Fawkner in the north.
Last week, in apparent anticipation of the Optus launch, Australia’s largest carrier Telstra announced plans to expand its 4G coverage in several cities, with more than 1,000 base stations to be deployed by mid-2013.
