The company said that it was building the site to make sure that all its users across Latin America and the world have the fastest and most reliable access possible to its services.
Google said that the facility will be one of the most efficient and environmentally friendly in Latin America and would be built to the same high standards it used around the world.
Chile was chosen to host the data centre because of its combination of reliable infrastructure, skilled workforce and commitment to transparent and business friendly regulations, according to Google. Once operational the data centre will employ up to 20 people.
The company is setting itself apart from other data centre operators, which have targeted Latam’s largest nation, Brazil, as their entry point into the region. The facility will be brought online by the end of 2013.
This latest push into Latin America follows a significant infrastructure expansion in Asia-Pacific, where it is building data centres in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore.
