Winners of Capacity Awards embody year of innovation in wholesale telecoms

The winners of the 2012 Capacity Awards were announced at a highly enjoyable ceremony yesterday evening, which saw 16 winners take to the stage to collect their awards in front of a packed ballroom.

Innovation and excellence were the main themes for the night, with the Capacity Awards judging panel commending the strong progress made by the industry as a whole during the last 12 months.

“The quality and breadth of the submissions made their assessment and comparison unusually challenging, but it is clear that wholesale telecoms is alive and kicking in the face of adversity,” said Tom Wheadon, partner at Simmons & Simmons.

“Importantly the stand out feature of many submissions was the continuing focus on customer needs as the primary driver for growth and development.”

Orange took home the much-coveted ‘Best global wholesale carrier’ award. The company has enjoyed a successful 2012, recording significant levels of growth in its voice services, as well as extending its operations into emerging markets, most notably Africa. The judges also singled out its anti-fraud solution.

The first ever Capacity ‘Personality of the Year’ award went to Matt Carter, Sprint’s president of global wholesale and emerging solutions.

Carter was selected from the shortlist of eight high-profile executives from across the industry by an online poll, which over 1,000 readers participated in.

“I want to thank Capacity for this wonderful award. This achievement really reflects the accomplishment of the 30,000 people that work at Sprint, so on behalf of all of them, thank you,” he said.

Due to the high number of impressive performers in the market this year, the judges decided to select two winners for the prestigious ‘Judges Award’. NTT Europe collected its ‘Judges Award’ for its significant investment and contribution to the central and eastern European region in the last year.

OTEGLOBE collected its ‘Judges Award’ for a remarkable year, which saw the company continue its sustained period of growth, even in light of the economic turmoil in its domestic market.

“Those who know the wholesale business realise the significance of receiving a Capacity Award,” said Dino Andreou, CEO of OTEGLOBE. “We are very proud of this honour".

A big thank you to the judging panel as well as OTEGLOBE’s personnel who, with their devotion and hard work, contributed significantly to this great achievement.”

Interoute collected the Capacity Award for 'Best European wholesale carrier', while CDN provider EdgeCast was the only company to collect two awards, taking home the titles of ‘Best CDN offering’ and ‘Best market innovation’.
