Geo Networks is working with a range of partners, including ESB Telecoms, an Irish infrastructure company and bandwidth solutions provider, to bring the east-west ring to Dublin and the rest of Europe.
It will utilise the company’s extensive fibre network in the UK and FibreSpeed network in north Wales, Dublin and London, which replicates similar fibre links that have already been established in other major European cities.
With data demand in the UK substantially growing, the new diverse route is designed specifically for heavy data users, including data centre providers, mobile and fixed-line carriers, cloud providers and the digital, financial and high technology sectors.
Customers are expected to benefit from shorter routes, low latency bandwidth connectivity and 100Gbps capabilities. Cogent and EU Networks have already signed up to utilise the new network, and organisations across Ireland can connect to over 100 data centres and key internet exchanges in London as a result.
“With business demand for high capacity data networks growing all the time, it is vital that they have the infrastructure to support their needs,” said Chris Smedley, chief executive at Geo Networks.
“Customers on both sides of the Irish Sea will benefit from a single service provider offering a combination of two routes between the UK and Ireland, and diversity will provide unequalled resilience, unmatched in service availability.”
John McSweeney, head of innovation at ESB, commented on the benefits for Irish companies to connect to numerous data centres and key internet exchanges in London as a result of the development.
“This is a huge boost to Ireland’s communications infrastructure, which will help to attract high growth, data intensive companies to locate here,” he added.
