Airtel said it is now ready to test the technology in other major cities across the country, including in Abuja and Port Harcourt.
According to the company, the Lagos trial threw up exciting results for data users, and opened up access to simultaneous HD videos on applications like Youtube without buffering. Download speeds reached 37Mbps, with upload speeds achieving 10.6Mpbs.
Rajan Swaroop, CEO and managing director at Airtel Nigeria, heralded the development as significant for innovation in Nigerian telecoms. “In the coming weeks, we shall take this success story to other parts of the country so that Nigerians will benefit from this innovation when finally unveiled.”
In February Airtel Nigeria announced it had rolled out 3.75G services cross 36 states in Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
The pan-Nigerian launch was reportedly the widest and largest in the country, and allowed for a range of next-generation services to be used by consumers in Nigeria for the first time.
