Indian government agrees to CDMA spectrum price cut

The Indian government has approved a 50% cut in the reserve price for the country’s next CDMA auction.

The decision follows recommendations by a panel of ministers to cut the price by 30% to 50% after the only CDMA applicants for November’s auction pulled out.

In November, the price for CDMA airwaves was $660 million per megahertz of spectrum in all 22 Indian telecoms zones. This was 30% higher than GSM airwaves.

India’s next spectrum auction is planned for March and will see spectrum unsold in November auctioned off.

One potential bidder that did not take part in the November process is Russia’s Sistema, which complained of the high reserve price.
