North Korean operator Koryolink increases 3G subscribers

North Korean operator Koryolink has almost doubled the amount of subscribers to its 3G service in the past 15 months, according to reports.

Koryolink, the only 3G provider in the country, has almost two million subscribers, a figure which has doubled in little over a year.

Local reports said that Koryolink CEO Ezz Heikal revealed figures which were later confirmed by parent company Orascom.

Koryolink is a joint venture between Egypt’s Orascom Telecom and the country’s Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, split 75% and 25% respectively.

Koryolink launched its network in December 2008 when mobile usage in the country was reportedly very low.3G is now available across North Korean capital Pyongyang and in all major cities of the country.

International users have been able to access a service which allows connection to the web, but regulators do not allow for access to domestic phone lines.

The North Korean government have also been known to revoke the service at its discretion.
