The move reiterates Dimension Data’s intentions to increase its presence in sub-Saharan Africa, and the bid is the first proposed acquisition of a company in the country following Kenya’s peaceful presidential election in March. The election has reportedly restored faith in the country’s economy.
Dimension Data’s bid is part of the company’s increasing strategy of investing in fast growing economies, with AccessKenya providing homes and businesses access to the internet. The company has reportedly suspended trading since the offer was issued.
Dimension Data is owned by Japan’s Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp, and operates in Kenya already through a company called internet solutions.
Through the planned acquisition, it will own a fibre optic network in Kenya’s two main cities and two wireless networks covering an additional 10 towns.
