Optus has been trialling the 4G service in Canberra over the last month, and the company expects the official launch to allow its customers to download and stream data much faster, and in many more places, than on existing networks.
“The launch of Optus 4G in Canberra today represents another important milestone in our ambitious 4G expansion programme, which in the past 12 months has delivered 4G to many mainland capital cities and holiday hotspots such as the Gold Coast, Coffs Harbour, Byron Bay and Toowoomba,” said Günther Ottendorfer, managing director of Optus Networks.
The 4G service is available in 13 sites across the city, with plans to grow this to 50 sites by the end of the year.
“We are aiming to expand coverage of our integrated 4G network to 70% of Australia’s metro population by mid-2014,” Ottendorfer added.
