At the ‘World IPv6 Launch day’ in June last year, Telefónica pledged its commitment to adopting this Internet Protocol upgrade, and a trial has seen the activation of the service for approximately 200,000 broadband customers in Peru.
These customers are accessing sites such as Google, Facebook and YouTube, and IPv4 is being provided for non-migrated services.
Telefónica hopes to extend the IPv6 activation to corporate and mobile-broadband customers when it becomes fully operational.
The company’s R&D arm is said to be looking at IPv6 in digital services and products by implementing the launch of the FI-WARE data centre In Spain – co-funded by the European Commission within the Future Internet Public-Private partnership (FI-PPP).
This is expected to be open to application developers next autumn, and will allow them to access the platform and create OTT services, over both IPv4 and IPv6.
In April this year, Telefónica approved the sale of 40% of its assets in Latin America to Corporación Multi Inversiones (CMI).
