The service is said to double existing average speeds to 24-30Mbps, claiming to offer consumers the fastest 4G network in Europe and equalling speeds found in South Korea.
The double-speed service is available to all EE customers on their existing 4G plans, and the operator will also introduce the UK’s first pay-as-you-go 4G mobile broadband plan.
The upgraded service will be offered first in Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester and Sheffield, and forms part of the company’s plans to attract one million more 4G users by the end of the year.
“We’re staying one step ahead with the launch of double speed 4G and a range of new innovative plans and services – designed to transform the way our customers connect and share content,” said Olaf Swantee, CEO of EE.
EE controversially launched its 4G services last year ahead of UK rivals, when it was granted permission to convert some of its excess 1800MHz spectrum, gained through the combination of Orange and T-Mobile’s spectrum auction, for 4G services in August 2012.
Following the UK spectrum auction in February, four other operators – Vodafone, Three, O2 and BT – are preparing to launch rival 4G UK services later this year.
