The French company revealed that the mobile-to-mobile service will initially be available to Orange Money customers in Mali, Senegal and Cote d'Ivoire.
It is hoped the service will tap into the €200million the mobile firm is said to have transferred between these three countries each year.
The service targets both private and business transactions and enables users to send money via their mobile phone directly to a recipient’s account or an Orange Money distributor.
“In launching Orange Money International Transfer today, several months of work to simplify life for our customers come to fruition. We are proud to be the first operator to offer customers the ability to make international money transfers between mobile phones in this area of Western Africa,” says Thierry Millet, director of strategic NFC and payment programme at Orange.”
Orange Money has seven million customers and is available in 13 countries across Africa and the Middle East, which includes Morocco, Jordan and Kenya.
