Typhoon Haiyan (known locally as Yolanda) hit the areas of Visayas and Leyte in the Philippines and TSF infrastructure was deployed one day ahead of the hit following prior alerts.
Haiyan hit wind speeds of up to 300kmph and has already claimed the lives of three local people and injured a further seven.
TSF’s Bangkok team, as well as members of its international headquarters in Europe, were dispatched to the Philippines yesterday.
As a result, victims of the disaster are able to make calls to their families to reassure them that they are still alive.
TSF was one of the first NGO responders on the ground and is also deploying a telecoms hub for other NGOs to co-ordinate rescue strategies through.
Jean-François Cazenave, president and co-founder of TSF, spoke exclusively to Capacity earlier this year about the importance of telecoms infrastructure in disaster zones.
